Growbar - The Butterfly Bar

Growbar – The Butterfly Bar

Tempt clouds of beautiful butterflies to your garden with spectacular displays of crimson and purple blooms. The nectar-rich flowers that adorn Red Valerian, Thyme Serpyllum and Scabious are completely irresistible to our fluttery friends, and will fill your garden with magical summer colours.

This nifty Growbar makes a thoughtful gift or fun family project. All you’ll need is a small container, water and a warm, sunny spot on the windowsill. Within 6-8 weeks the seedlings will be ready to plant into the ground or into pots.

What is inside the box?

  • Compressed coir bar containing:
    • Red Valerian Seeds
    • Thyme Serpyllum Seeds
    • Scabious Seeds
  • Full care instructions
  • Gift Card

Growbar is 100% eco-friendly. Coir is made with coconut fibres and is a sustainable alternative to peat. The recyclable film wrap is made from sugar cane.

Each Growbar is carefully handmade and beautifully packaged, chocolate bar-style, by a small team in South London.

Instructions

Start by unwrapping your Growbar and place it with the brown protective paper facing upwards, into a container with plenty of space to allow it to expand. Gently pour half a litre of water into the tray and position indoors on a warm, bright sunny windowsill. The seeds will need to be a cosy 18°-22° to germinate.

Water regularly and ensure the Growbar is perfectly moist, it should remain the colour of a rich dark ginger cake.

After a few weeks you should have a bar neatly dotted with little seedlings. These will be happy growing together in the bar for a further month in their sunny location.

When the seedlings have produced 4-8 leaves you may then gently separate them, being careful to not damage the delicate roots, and plant them in individual pots or a sunny weed-free spot in the garden. Plants grown in the ground with plenty of space and sunlight will produce more abundant fragrant foliage but it is possible to grow the seedlings in large containers on the balcony or patio.

How to identify your seedlings:

  • Red Valerian seedlings have long, smooth leaves. They will flourish in full sun in well-drained soil. Snip off any dead heads during the summer to prolong flowering.
  • Thyme Serpyllum seedlings have tiny, aromatic oval shaped leaves. This creeping Thyme will be happy along a path or in a pot and positioned where butterflies can reach it.
  • Scabious seedlings are feathery and slightly hairy. The flowers are happy in full sun and well-drained soil. Remove deadheads regularly to prolong flowering.
